The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for eight districts in Kerala as the state prepares for moderate to heavy rainfall over the next few days. According to the Meteorological Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, the warning has been issued as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety in vulnerable and rain-prone regions.
The districts placed under yellow alert include Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Other districts across the state are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall.
A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. The IMD has also warned of isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30 to 50 kmph across Kerala and nearby regions over the next five days.
The weather department further stated that heavy rainfall is likely to continue across Kerala and Mahe during the next seven days. Similar weather activity is also expected over parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, northern parts of India are also expected to witness changing weather conditions. The IMD has predicted scattered rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across states including Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh over the coming days.
Authorities have advised residents in rain-affected regions to remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding, landslides, and strong winds.
