Several parts of Maharashtra witnessed intense weather activity on Thursday, May 7, as heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds swept across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane, warning residents to stay cautious as unstable weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.
Mumbai Braces for Rain and Thunderstorms
Mumbai is likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph. The sudden shift in weather comes after soaring temperatures touched nearly 44 degrees Celsius in some areas, creating an unusual mix of extreme heat and storm activity.
Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during lightning activity and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain spells.
Strong Storm Activity in Kalyan and Mulund
Areas including Kalyan and Mulund experienced powerful storm conditions on Thursday evening, with strong winds and heavy rain affecting normal life. Videos shared by residents on social media showed dark skies, strong gusts, and reduced visibility as people remained indoors for safety.
Mumbai and Thane were placed on alert as weather systems intensified across the region.
IMD Warning for Thane and Konkan Region
Thane district, along with several coastal areas in the Konkan belt, is expected to witness significant rainfall and rising humidity levels over the next 72 hours. The IMD noted that the combination of high humidity and unstable weather could lead to discomfort and possible disruptions.
In an official update, the IMD stated that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rain, and gusty winds are very likely at isolated places across South Konkan-Goa, South Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada regions.
Rain and Lightning Forecast Across Maharashtra
Apart from Mumbai and Thane, thunderstorm activity is also expected in Pune and several parts of western Maharashtra. Weather experts have warned of unseasonal rainfall, lightning strikes, and sudden wind activity, which may impact transport and daily routines in affected districts.
Citizens have been advised to monitor official weather updates and take necessary precautions as the state continues to witness rapidly changing weather conditions.
