Delhi-NCR and several parts of northern India continue to battle an intense heatwave, but weather experts say relief could arrive soon as a strong western disturbance moves towards the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department, satellite imagery from the advanced INSAT-3DS weather monitoring system has identified a major weather system developing over the Mediterranean region and moving towards northwest India.
Recent weather data showed thick cloud formations spreading across Afghanistan and Pakistan, while moisture levels from the Arabian Sea have also increased significantly. Meteorologists say these changing atmospheric conditions could trigger rainfall and thunderstorms across parts of North India over the coming days.
The development comes as Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram remain under severe heatwave conditions. Temperatures in several areas have crossed the 45°C mark, prompting authorities to issue an “orange alert” and advise people to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak daytime hours.
The extreme heat is expected to continue across several regions of northwest, central, and eastern India for the next few days. However, the approaching western disturbance is likely to gradually weaken heatwave intensity in some northern states.
IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said orange alerts have been issued for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha due to persistent heatwave conditions. Red alerts have also been issued for parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha where temperatures remain exceptionally high.
Weather experts noted that the western disturbance has already started influencing atmospheric patterns across northern India since Thursday. As a result, regions including Jammu and Kashmir are expected to witness a gradual drop in temperatures along with increased cloud cover and possible rainfall activity.
The expected weather change could bring much-needed relief to millions of residents facing one of the harshest heatwaves of the season.
