A SpiceJet flight (SG670) operating from Mumbai to Kolkata made an emergency landing late Sunday night after one of its engines reportedly failed mid-air, according to Kolkata Airport officials.
The aircraft landed safely at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, and the full emergency was withdrawn at 11:38 pm, officials confirmed. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members.
“A full emergency was declared as a precaution after the pilot reported engine trouble. The flight landed safely, and the situation was brought under control,” an airport spokesperson said.
Recent Operational Disruptions
The incident comes just days after several airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, faced operational challenges due to technical glitches in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on November 7.
The malfunction caused delays in over 100 flights, prompting airlines to issue advisories requesting passengers to check updated flight statuses before arriving at the airport.
SpiceJet had also posted an update on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“Due to ATC congestion at Delhi, all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights might get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via spicejet.com.”
Similar Incident in September
This is not the first time a SpiceJet aircraft has encountered a technical issue in recent months. On September 12, a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft flying from Kandla (Gujarat) to Mumbai made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) after an outer wheel was found detached on the runway following take-off.
According to the airline’s spokesperson, the flight landed smoothly on Runway 27 at 3:51 pm, and all passengers and crew were safe. The aircraft taxied to the terminal under its own power, and passengers disembarked normally.
The airline said that the pilot had followed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and requested an emergency landing as a precaution.
Safety Protocols Followed
Following Sunday’s incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to review the technical details of the engine failure. SpiceJet stated that all standard safety measures were promptly executed, ensuring the safety of passengers and crew.
While operations have since resumed normally, the airline is expected to conduct a detailed inspection of the affected aircraft before returning it to service.
