Russia Applauds India’s Strategic Autonomy, Calls It a Rising Global Power

Russia has commended India’s independent approach to global diplomacy, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stating that New Delhi commands “deep respect” for consistently prioritising its national interests while navigating complex geopolitical challenges.

In a video message delivered at the Russia and India: Toward a New Bilateral Agenda conference, Lavrov described India as an increasingly influential player in the evolving global order. He emphasised that Moscow views strengthening ties with New Delhi as a key foreign policy priority.

Highlighting India’s growing stature, Lavrov noted that the country has firmly established itself as a major political and economic force. He also referred to India as a “distinct civilisation,” underlining its unique identity and role in shaping global affairs.

According to Lavrov, India’s commitment to strategic autonomy—making decisions based on its own national interests rather than external pressures—has significantly contributed to its rising global influence. He said this approach has positioned India as a leading power in an emerging multipolar world.

The Russian minister further described India-Russia relations as a model of mutual respect and trust, built on equality and long-standing cooperation. He stressed that continued high-level dialogue between the two nations remains crucial in strengthening bilateral ties.

The remarks come at a time when India has faced external pressure, particularly from the United States, regarding its continued imports of Russian oil. India has maintained that its decisions are guided solely by national interest and the welfare of its citizens.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who also addressed the conference virtually, reaffirmed the strength of the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between the two countries. He noted that decades of cooperation have contributed to regional and global stability.

Jaishankar also highlighted economic goals, stating that both countries are working towards increasing bilateral trade from approximately USD 68.7 billion to USD 100 billion by 2030 in a balanced and sustainable manner.

The statements from both sides reflect a shared intent to deepen cooperation across strategic, economic, and diplomatic fronts amid shifting global power dynamics.
