TVK chief Vijay arrived at Lok Bhavan on Thursday to meet Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, a day after formally staking claim to form the government in the state with support from the Congress party.

This marks Vijay’s second visit to the Governor’s residence within 24 hours following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, where his party emerged as the single largest party after the April 23 polls.

On Wednesday, Vijay submitted a letter of support from the Congress party and requested the Governor to invite TVK to form the government. However, officials stated that no final decision has yet been taken regarding the invitation to form the administration.

TVK Emerges as Single Largest Party

TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. Since Vijay won from two constituencies, one seat will eventually fall vacant after he resigns from one constituency, reducing the party’s effective strength to 107 MLAs.

The Congress party, which had contested the elections as part of the DMK-led alliance, later extended support to TVK. With Congress adding its five MLAs, the alliance currently reaches a total of 112 seats, still short of the majority mark of 118 required to form the government independently.

Political Discussions Continue

Speaking to reporters outside Lok Bhavan, TVK leader VS Babu expressed confidence that developments regarding government formation would move forward soon.

When questioned about the possible swearing-in ceremony, he stated that discussions were ongoing and more clarity would emerge shortly.

Babu also declined to comment on allegations regarding pressure from the Centre, saying he would not speak on matters about which he had no information.

Governor Yet to Take Final Decision

Political observers are closely watching the Governor’s next move as Tamil Nadu remains in a phase of intense political negotiations following the unexpected election outcome.

The situation has sparked fresh discussions about possible alliance shifts and additional support that may be required for TVK to comfortably cross the majority mark in the Assembly.
