India have begun recalibrating their approach at the T20 World Cup as they prepare for the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.

At a training session under lights at the Ferozeshah Kotla in New Delhi on Tuesday evening, India’s bowlers took centre stage. Pacers and spinners trained in separate nets, bowling at full intensity for nearly two hours — an uncommon sight during a long tournament where players typically conserve energy.

With batting dominating headlines over the past month, the renewed emphasis on bowling signals a strategic adjustment ahead of tougher contests.

Only Abhishek Sharma, recovering from illness, missed the demanding session.

Colombo Conditions Prompt Tactical Shift

The focus extends beyond the immediate fixture against Namibia. The Indian think-tank is already planning for the conditions in Colombo, where the pitch at the R. Premadasa Stadium has shown signs of sluggishness.

Pakistan, stationed in Colombo for the past two weeks, may have better familiarity with the conditions. India, meanwhile, are keen to adapt quickly.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate emphasised that the team’s preparation remains cricket-focused despite the emotional and political backdrop surrounding India-Pakistan encounters.

“We understand the sentiments, but the focus is on cricket. Colombo will be challenging, and we need to bring our best game,” he said.

Batting Approach Under Review

Tournament pitches so far have not been conducive to high-scoring matches. The surfaces have been slower than expected, prompting India to reconsider their ultra-aggressive batting template.

Doeschate hinted at a possible revision in strategy.

“The pitches haven’t played quite the way we anticipated. We’ve been playing an attacking brand of cricket, but on slower tracks you need technique and adaptability,” he said.

The narrow escape against USA highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in reading match situations rather than pushing for excessively high totals.

Bowlers Yet to Hit Top Gear

While India’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance against USA, the coaching staff believes there is room for improvement.

“I don’t think our bowlers have fully fired yet,” Doeschate admitted. “We expect more in terms of execution and control.”

The presence of experienced, world-class bowlers provides balance, allowing batters the freedom to attack — but only if the attack responds effectively to varying match scenarios.

Washington Sundar Adds Flexibility

Washington Sundar returned to training after recovering from a rib injury, giving the team additional combination options.

India’s squad depth, particularly the presence of multiple allrounders, offers tactical flexibility depending on pitch behaviour and opposition.

“The luxury of having several allrounders allows us to adjust combinations. That’s where Washington becomes important,” Doeschate noted.

Eyes on the Bigger Prize

With the Pakistan match now cleared and confirmed, India’s tournament campaign enters a decisive phase.

Adapting to slower pitches, sharpening bowling execution and fine-tuning batting temperament could define the outcome of the marquee contest in Colombo.

The real test, as the team believes, is just beginning.
