Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans, has been fined ₹12 lakh by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for maintaining a slow over rate during their IPL 2026 clash against the Delhi Capitals.

The penalty comes despite Gujarat Titans securing a nail-biting victory in what turned out to be one of the most thrilling matches of the season so far.

Reason Behind the Fine

According to the IPL’s official statement, Gill was penalised under the league’s Code of Conduct for minimum over-rate offences. As this was his first violation of the season, he received a fine of ₹12 lakh.

However, stricter consequences await if the offence is repeated. A second breach could lead to a higher fine, while a third may result in a one-match suspension.

A Last-Over Thriller in Delhi

The match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium delivered high drama till the final ball.

Defending a total of 210/4, Gujarat Titans held their nerve as Delhi Capitals fell short by just one run. With 13 runs required in the final over, Gill entrusted the ball to Prasidh Krishna, who managed to contain the opposition despite intense pressure.

Miller’s Decision Sparks Debate

The game took a dramatic turn in the closing moments when David Miller declined a single on the penultimate delivery, choosing to keep strike instead of rotating it to Kuldeep Yadav.

While Miller smashed a crucial six earlier, the decision not to take a single proved costly. On the final ball, Kuldeep was run out, sealing a narrow defeat for Delhi Capitals and triggering widespread discussion among fans and analysts.

Strong Performances from Both Sides

Gill led from the front with a composed 70 off 45 balls, supported by valuable half-centuries from Jos Buttler and Washington Sundar.

For Delhi Capitals, captain KL Rahul played a brilliant knock of 92, setting up a strong chase. However, disciplined bowling from Prasidh Krishna and Player of the Match Rashid Khan turned the game in Gujarat’s favour.

Final Takeaway

While Gujarat Titans celebrated a thrilling win, the fine on Gill serves as a reminder of the strict regulations governing match pace in the IPL.

As the tournament progresses, teams will need to balance performance under pressure with compliance to avoid costly penalties.
