Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled Phase 1 of the Noida International Airport, positioning it as a key driver of employment, regional connectivity, and India’s long-term economic growth. The announcement comes at a time when global uncertainties, particularly due to tensions in West Asia, continue to impact energy and economic stability.
The airport project, located in Jewar, has been developed at a total cost of approximately ₹11,282 crore. Of this, ₹6,876 crore has been invested by the concessionaire, while the Uttar Pradesh Government has contributed ₹4,406 crore towards land acquisition.
Addressing the gathering, Modi described the airport as a transformational project for future generations. He remarked that the development would open new avenues for youth, businesses, and farmers, while strengthening the vision of a “Viksit Bharat.”
He also noted that the inauguration marks only the beginning, stating that the complete realization of the airport’s potential will unfold with public participation in the coming phases.
Boost to Regional Connectivity and Economy
The Prime Minister highlighted that the new airport will significantly benefit surrounding regions, including Agra, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Etawah, Faridabad, and Bulandshahr. It is expected to enhance logistics efficiency, improve market access for farmers, and support the growth of small and medium enterprises.
Emphasizing Uttar Pradesh’s rapid aviation growth, Modi stated that the state now ranks among those with the highest number of international airports in India.
Part of a Larger Infrastructure Push
The airport forms part of a broader infrastructure expansion in western Uttar Pradesh. Modi pointed out recent developments such as the Noida semiconductor facility, the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, and the Meerut Metro as examples of India’s accelerating progress.
He further added that once fully operational, the airport could handle flights departing at intervals as short as two minutes, underscoring its scale and capacity.
Addressing Global Economic Concerns
Referring to the ongoing crisis in West Asia, Modi acknowledged its impact on global supply chains, particularly in food, fuel, and energy sectors. He assured that the government is actively taking measures to minimize the burden on Indian households.
India’s Expanding Aviation Sector
Highlighting India’s aviation growth, Modi noted that the number of airports in the country has increased from 74 before 2014 to over 160 today. He added that improved connectivity is now reaching even smaller cities.
Looking ahead, the government has earmarked ₹29,000 crore for further expansion, including plans to develop 100 new airports and 200 helipads. He also emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance aviation training and support the sector’s rapid expansion.
