The dramatic rise in tourist arrivals to Lakshadweep after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2024 visit has emerged as a major example of how public messaging can influence consumer behaviour and travel trends in India.

According to RTI data accessed by India Today, tourist footfall in Lakshadweep increased sharply from just 3,875 visitors in 2020 to a record 68,328 in 2024. The biggest growth came after PM Modi visited the islands in January 2024 and shared photographs and videos showcasing Lakshadweep’s scenic beauty and tourism potential.

The visit soon turned into a nationwide conversation after several Maldivian ministers allegedly made controversial remarks against the Prime Minister on social media. The comments triggered outrage across India, leading to calls for boycotting the Maldives and encouraging domestic tourism to Lakshadweep instead.

Tourism numbers indicate that many travellers may have responded to the campaign. Lakshadweep recorded 68,328 tourist arrivals in 2024 compared to 46,551 in 2023, reflecting a nearly 47 percent increase within a year.

At the same time, the Maldives witnessed a major decline in Indian visitors. Data from the Maldives Tourism Ministry showed Indian tourist arrivals falling from 2,09,193 in 2023 to 1,30,805 in 2024, marking a drop of around 37.5 percent. India, once one of the Maldives’ largest tourism markets, reportedly slipped to sixth position in visitor share.

The Lakshadweep tourism push gained additional momentum through celebrities, influencers and travel companies who amplified the campaign after PM Modi’s social media posts. The islands, often compared to the Maldives because of their natural beauty, quickly became a symbol of promoting domestic tourism.

The development has gained renewed attention after PM Modi recently urged citizens to avoid unnecessary foreign travel and reduce discretionary spending amid economic uncertainty caused by the Iran conflict. Over the past week, he has advised people to conserve fuel, use public transport and postpone non-essential purchases to help protect India’s foreign exchange reserves.

The Lakshadweep episode is now being viewed as a case study of how political messaging combined with national economic sentiment can influence public behaviour on a large scale.

Interestingly, while detailed tourism data for Lakshadweep has been shared till 2024, figures for 2025 have not yet been released despite the RTI application being filed in 2026. The absence of updated numbers has drawn attention given the extraordinary tourism growth witnessed after the Prime Minister’s visit.
