The Kerala government has approved the first-phase alignment of the long-awaited Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail Project, marking a major milestone in the capital city’s urban mobility plans.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan gave the green signal to the 31-kilometre corridor, which aims to connect major administrative, commercial, and transit hubs across the city. The project will be implemented by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the agency currently overseeing the Kochi Metro operations.

🚆 Metro Route and Stations

According to the official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the first-phase metro corridor will start from Pappanamcode and extend up to Enchakkal, covering a distance of 31 kilometres with 27 stations.

The alignment will pass through major points including Killipalam, Palayam, Sreekaryam, Kazhakoottam, Technopark, Kochuveli, and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.

Key interchange stations have been planned at Kazhakoottam, Technopark, and Karyavattom, ensuring smooth transfers for daily commuters and IT professionals.

🏗️ Preparatory Works Underway

As part of the preliminary infrastructure development, KMRL has already begun work on flyovers at Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom, aimed at reducing traffic congestion along the metro alignment corridor.
Officials confirmed that construction of the Sreekaryam flyover is progressing rapidly, with others set to follow soon.

“The Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project will serve as a catalyst for the city’s future development and help address its growing traffic demands,” the CMO stated.

đź“‘ Planning and Approval Background

Initially proposed as a light metro project under the Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation Ltd (KRTL) in 2015, the Thiruvananthapuram Metro plan underwent major revisions over the years.

In September 2022, the state handed over the project to Kochi Metro Rail Limited, tasking it with preparing the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), Alternative Analysis Report (AAR), and Detailed Project Report (DPR) in accordance with the Metro Rail Policy 2017.

After a thorough mobility study, KMRL concluded that a full-scale metro system—and not a monorail or light metro—would best serve the city’s rising commuter needs and future population growth.

🌇 Seamless Connectivity Across Urban Hubs

The final alignment, presented by KMRL on November 4, was approved by the government on Friday, paving the way for a metro route that connects Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Thampanoor Bus Stand, Central Railway Station, and the Government Secretariat.

Officials emphasized that the project will enhance last-mile connectivity, promote sustainable urban mobility, and transform Thiruvananthapuram into a model smart city.
