The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert across most districts of Karnataka as widespread rainfall is expected to lash the state until October 29. The alert covers both coastal and interior regions, with Bengaluru also likely to experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next few days.
According to the IMD forecast, the rainfall activity is being triggered by two developing weather systems — one over the southeast Arabian Sea and another over the southwest Bay of Bengal — both of which are expected to intensify into depressions, bringing significant moisture and instability across the region.
Heavy Rain and Wind Warnings
- Coastal Karnataka: Districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada are under “Heavy to Very Heavy Rain” warnings.
- South Interior Karnataka: Areas such as Kodagu, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Mysuru, Mandya, and Ramanagara are expected to witness heavy showers and thunderstorms, especially during evenings and nights.
- North Interior Karnataka: Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Raichur, and Belagavi will see isolated heavy rain spells between October 23 and 24.
In Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts, the IMD predicts moderate to heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours, with temperatures ranging between 28°C and 21°C.
Wind Speeds and Fishermen Advisory
- Interior Districts: Winds are expected to reach 30–40 km/h, with strong gusts during thunderstorms.
- Coastal Areas: Wind speeds could surge up to 55 km/h, making sea conditions extremely rough.
The IMD has strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until weather conditions stabilize.
Weather Systems Driving the Rain
Meteorologists attribute the intense rainfall to the low-pressure systems forming over both seas:
- The southeast Arabian Sea system is likely to intensify into a depression within 24 hours.
- The Bay of Bengal system is expected to move towards North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh, indirectly influencing rain patterns in Karnataka.
As these two systems interact, moisture-laden winds are expected to converge over southern India, leading to widespread rain and localized flooding in low-lying regions.
Public Advisory
Authorities have urged residents to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
- Stay updated through IMD advisories and district administration alerts.
- Remain cautious of waterlogging, falling trees, and power outages in storm-prone areas.
Coastal and hilly regions, particularly Udupi, Kodagu, and Shivamogga, have been asked to remain on high alert due to the risk of landslides and flash floods.
Outlook
With the weather systems expected to persist until October 29, the IMD anticipates continued rainfall and overcast conditions across much of Karnataka.
Bengaluru residents can expect occasional heavy downpours with thunder and lightning, while coastal regions may face rough sea conditions and strong gusty winds through the week.
