With the Christmas and New Year holiday season approaching, the Indian Railways is witnessing a surge in ticket bookings as families plan trips to popular destinations. For parents travelling with children, it’s important to understand the IRCTC’s child ticket and fare policy, which outlines how much passengers must pay based on their child’s age and berth requirements.

Train journeys remain one of the most affordable and comfortable travel options for families, but many passengers are often unaware of the exact age-based ticketing rules that apply to minors.

Indian Railways Child Ticket Policy

According to the Ministry of Railways, children below five years of age can travel free of cost without needing to buy a ticket — provided they do not occupy a separate berth or seat.

However, if parents want a separate berth or chair car seat for a child below five years, they must pay the full adult fare.

These rules were clarified in a circular issued on March 6, 2020, which continues to guide current IRCTC ticketing policy.

The circular states:
“Children under five years of age shall be carried free. However, separate berth or seat (in chair car) shall not be given. Therefore, purchase of any ticket is not required provided separate berth is not claimed. However, if berth/seat shall be sought on voluntary basis for children of age below 5 years, then full adult fare shall be charged.”

Fare Rules Based on Age

Here’s a quick breakdown of Indian Railways’ child fare rules:

  • Below 5 years:
    • Travel free of cost.
    • No ticket required unless a separate berth or seat is requested.
  • 5 to below 12 years:
    • Without berth/seat: Pay child fare (discounted).
    • With berth/seat: Pay full adult fare.
  • 12 years & above:
    • Charged full adult fare regardless of berth or seat choice.

Why Awareness Matters

The Indian Railways has emphasized that parents must verify ticketing details while booking through IRCTC to avoid confusion or last-minute fare discrepancies. The policy is designed to balance affordability and comfort, allowing families to choose between shared or separate berths depending on their travel needs.

With the holiday travel rush expected to peak in late December, officials advise passengers to book early, ensure correct age details, and review berth preferences before confirming reservations.
