India Maintains Energy Stability Despite Global Uncertainty

As geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt global energy markets, India is taking proactive steps to ensure stability at home. Rising oil and gas prices linked to the Iran conflict have prompted the government to focus on uninterrupted supply, efficient distribution, and citizen safety.

A major indicator of resilience came with the arrival of LPG tanker BW TYR at Mumbai port, highlighting that India’s fuel supply chain remains operational despite challenges in key international shipping routes.

Supply Chains Remain Strong

Authorities have confirmed that port operations across the country are functioning smoothly, with no signs of congestion. This has helped prevent delays and bottlenecks, ensuring that essential fuel supplies continue to reach consumers without disruption.

Expansion of Domestic Gas Connections

To further strengthen energy access, the government has accelerated the rollout of piped natural gas (PNG) connections under the expanded National PNG Drive 2.0, now extended until June 30.

  • Over 3.1 lakh new connections were activated in March
  • More than 2.7 lakh additional connections are currently in progress

City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies have been directed to speed up installations, ensuring wider access to cleaner fuel options.

LPG Distribution Remains Steady

Cooking gas availability—a critical concern during crises—has remained stable across the country.

  • Over 50 lakh LPG cylinders delivered daily since March 1
  • More than 3.2 lakh 5kg cylinders sold to migrant workers since March 23
  • Over 63,000 cylinders distributed in a single day

These measures are aimed at supporting vulnerable communities and ensuring uninterrupted access to essential cooking fuel.

Support Operations for Indians Abroad

Alongside domestic measures, India is actively managing large-scale support operations for its citizens in conflict-affected regions.

  • Over 5.72 lakh passengers have returned to India since February 28
  • Diplomatic missions are operating 24/7 helplines
  • 959 Indian seafarers have been safely repatriated so far

These efforts underline the government’s focus on citizen safety amid ongoing global uncertainty.

Global Pressure from Energy Disruptions

The ongoing crisis has intensified concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments.

Disruptions in this region have led to:

  • Rising crude oil prices
  • Increased shipping and insurance costs
  • Supply chain uncertainties worldwide

Countries across the globe are reviewing strategic reserves and diversifying energy sources to mitigate risks.

India’s Dual Strategy: Stability and Preparedness

India’s response reflects a balanced approach:

  • Domestic focus: Ensuring stable fuel supply and expanding gas access
  • Global response: Supporting citizens abroad and monitoring international risks

Officials emphasise that the goal is to remain prepared rather than reactive, ensuring that essential services continue uninterrupted even as global markets face volatility.
