A shocking and deeply disturbing case has surfaced from Haryana’s Panipat district, where a 32-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering four children, including her own three-year-old son. Police say the woman, identified as Poonam, appears to be mentally unstable and may have been motivated by intense psychological distress.
The case initially came to light after a six-year-old girl was found dead on Monday. Upon investigation, Panipat Police discovered similarities with two earlier cases where young girls had died under suspicious circumstances but were presumed accidental by their families.
Pattern of Killings Over Two Years
Panipat Superintendent of Police Bhupendra Singh said the woman confessed during interrogation that she had killed:
- Two girls aged 6
- One girl aged 9
- Her own son, aged 3
All three girl victims were her relatives. Police said she drowned each child using the same method — in a water-filled tub or tank.
Police: Behaviour Emerged After Marriage
Investigators noted that Poonam’s behaviour reportedly changed after her marriage in 2019. She had moved from Siwah village in Panipat to Bhawar village in Sonipat.
According to police, Poonam developed a fixation on the physical appearance of young girls. During questioning, she reportedly made statements indicating extreme psychological distortion.
The SP said:
“She appears to be mentally ill. She even killed her own son fearing suspicion from family.”
Earlier Deaths Mistaken as Accidents
Before the latest death, the families of previous victims believed the incidents were tragic accidents and performed last rites without raising doubts.
Police are now reviewing those earlier cases to formally reopen and document them as homicides.
