The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police has registered a fresh FIR against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, along with six others, in connection with the long-running National Herald case.

The FIR pertains to the alleged irregularities in the acquisition of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the company that publishes the National Herald newspaper. The case has seen multiple legal developments over the past decade, with allegations that Congress funds were misused in the takeover of AJL through the company Young Indian, in which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi hold majority shares.

According to officials, the new FIR has been registered under:

  • Section 403 – Misappropriation of property
  • Section 406 – Criminal breach of trust
  • Section 420 – Cheating
  • Section 120B – Criminal conspiracy

These charges collectively point to alleged financial misconduct and conspiracy surrounding the transfer of AJL’s assets.

The Congress party has previously dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, claiming the case is part of a larger campaign to target opposition leaders. The fresh FIR is expected to intensify the legal and political battle ahead of key elections.
