Commuters in Bengaluru will have to shell out more for autorickshaw rides starting August 1, as the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of Bengaluru Urban district has officially revised the fare structure.
According to Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesha, the new fare mandates a minimum charge of ₹36 for the first 2 km—up from the previous ₹30. After that, commuters will be charged ₹18 per additional kilometre, compared to the earlier ₹15.
A significant change has also been made to night-time fares. Travel between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. will now cost 50% more due to a night surcharge. Additionally, the order dated July 14 includes revisions in luggage and waiting time charges. Passengers can carry up to 20 kg of baggage free of cost. Beyond that, ₹10 will be charged for every 20 kg or part thereof, up to a maximum limit of 50 kg.
Waiting charges will kick in after the first five minutes. A delay of every 15 minutes thereafter will incur an additional ₹10.
To enforce the revised fares, all autorickshaws are required to display the updated fare chart prominently. Drivers must also recalibrate and verify their fare meters in line with the new rates by October 31.
This fare hike comes after persistent demands from autorickshaw unions, citing increased fuel prices, inflation, and rising cost of living. The last fare revision took place in 2021.
