Noida’s upcoming Jewar airport — officially the Noida International Airport — is moving closer to becoming operational as construction progresses rapidly. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted a detailed on-site inspection on Thursday and later chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials overseeing the project.
Aerodrome Licence Pending
During the inspection, the Chief Minister noted that the airport has not yet received its aerodrome licence, a mandatory approval required before operations can begin. He directed officials to work quickly with all security agencies to complete outstanding compliance requirements.
Multiple rounds of inspections for the licence are currently in progress. As previously reported, the airport is expected to receive the licence by November 30.
Adityanath called the airport an “ambitious and prestigious project,” emphasising that all operational and security prerequisites must be fulfilled with top quality standards.
Security Audits and Checks Underway
On November 23, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) carried out a two-day audit of the airport’s security systems. The checks included:
- Passenger and baggage screening systems
- CCTV and surveillance network
- Access-control systems
- Perimeter security
- Runway and taxiway readiness
- Safety area compliance
- Lighting and navigational aids
NIAL CEO RK Singh earlier said that once the aerodrome licence is granted, the private concessionaire — along with Air India, Akasa Air and IndiGo — will finalize the operational start date. The inauguration will depend on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s availability.
Operational Readiness Requirements
Under the aerodrome manual, the airport must demonstrate:
- Certified runway and taxiway strength
- Functional aprons
- Meteorological and aeronautical data readiness
- Adequate fire and rescue services
- Wildlife hazard management systems
- Emergency response plans
- Ground-handling and security preparedness
- Trained operational staff and accountable management
When Will Noida Airport Open?
Construction is in its final phase. The terminal’s roofing has been completed, and technical trials are ongoing. The first phase spans 1,300 hectares and includes one runway and a large terminal building.
The airport — being developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG — is expected to begin operations by the end of 2025.
However, the official launch date for Phase 1 has not yet been announced.
