IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts as Rain and Thunderstorms Hit Several Tamil Nadu Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts in Tamil Nadu as rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected over the next few hours. The alerts warn of moderate to light rainfall, lightning, and potential disruptions to traffic due to waterlogging and slippery roads.
Southern Tamil Nadu Under Orange Alert
According to the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), isolated locations in
- Kanyakumari
- Tenkasi
- Thoothukkudi
- Tirunelveli
are likely to experience moderate rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning. The IMD’s orange alert signals the possibility of localised flooding and travel delays.
Widespread Yellow Alert Across 17 Districts
A broader yellow alert has been issued for several regions including:
Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Madurai, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Karur, Salem, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Thiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
These areas may witness light to moderate rainfall, with caution advised due to slippery roads and potential waterlogging.
Wind Speed Warning
The Chennai RMC has also forecast strong winds:
- 41–61 kmph gusts in southern districts,
- Moderate winds in eastern districts under the yellow alert.
Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, especially during travel, as weather conditions may change rapidly.
A total of 17 districts are currently under alert, including four districts under orange alert until 4 PM.
