A newly formed low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the Sri Lanka coast, is expected to trigger widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, with Chennai among the regions placed on alert. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for several districts, forecasting intense rainfall between 12 cm and 20 cm on Sunday.

According to the RMC, the districts of Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and the Karaikal region are likely to witness very heavy downpours as the weather system moves northwestward. Additionally, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, and three other districts may receive heavy rainfall during the same period.

The meteorological department has also predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Viluppuram, along with Puducherry and Karaikal.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay cautious, as localized flooding, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions are possible.
