India and the United States are moving forward in their trade talks, with discussions focusing on tariffs and energy cooperation. An Indian delegation, led by the Commerce and Industries Minister, visited the US between September 22–24, 2025, to meet senior US officials, business leaders, and investors.

During the visit, the Minister held talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Sergio Gor, US Ambassador-designate to India. Both sides described the meetings as “constructive”, signaling a positive momentum toward a potential new trade agreement.

Key Discussion Points

  • Tariffs: India is pushing for relief from the 25% tariffs imposed by the US on certain imports.
  • Energy: The US is pressing India to expand energy trade and gradually reduce its imports of Russian oil.
  • Business Confidence: Leading American companies reaffirmed confidence in India’s growth and expressed interest in further investments.
  • Pharma Sector: Talks also touched upon possible impacts on India’s pharmaceutical industry, though details will emerge later.

Geopolitical Backdrop

The negotiations are taking place amid wider geopolitical tensions, especially following US measures against Russia over the Ukraine war. President Trump’s administration added tariffs on Indian imports of Russian oil, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that tariffs and energy remain sensitive points in the relationship.

Despite challenges, both governments emphasized “positive intent” and are working toward a mutually beneficial agreement that strengthens economic ties and promotes long-term cooperation.
