Mangaluru: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has collected a significant sum of ₹1,57,52,210 from passengers through its fare rounding-off policy implemented in premium bus services. This figure was disclosed in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query.
Under this fare system, the final ticket amount is rounded off to the nearest higher rupee, leading to minor overcharges per ticket that have cumulatively generated over ₹1.57 crore. The practice has sparked debates around transparency and fairness in public transport pricing.
While KSRTC defends the policy as a standard practice aimed at operational ease, passenger rights activists have raised questions about the ethics of silently collecting surplus amounts without clear consent or disclosure on tickets.
The revelation has prompted calls for greater accountability and a review of such pricing mechanisms in government-run transportation services.
