US Warns Against Pressuring India to Sever Russia Defence Links Amid China Challenge

A former senior US official has cautioned Washington against pressuring India to abruptly end its long-standing defence relationship with Russia, warning that such a move could carry significant strategic risks.

Speaking before a congressional panel, Lindsey Ford emphasised that the US-India partnership plays a critical role in maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region and counterbalancing China’s growing influence. However, she noted that forcing New Delhi to rapidly disengage from Russian military equipment without viable alternatives could compromise India’s defence preparedness.

Ford pointed out that India continues to rely heavily on Russian-origin defence systems, and transitioning away from them requires time, planning, and dependable replacement options. Sudden policy shifts driven by sanctions or geopolitical pressure, she suggested, could undermine both India’s security and broader American strategic objectives.
