Former US President Donald Trump has once again asserted that he personally intervened to prevent a war between India and Pakistan during the May hostilities this year, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him to confirm that India would not escalate the conflict. India, however, continues to firmly deny that such a conversation ever took place.
Speaking at the US-Saudi Investment Forum, Trump said he warned both India and Pakistan of a 350% tariff if they did not agree to a ceasefire. According to Trump, this threat prompted direct calls from leaders of both nations.
Trump claimed that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif phoned first to express gratitude for “saving millions of lives.” He then stated that PM Modi called him and said, “We are not going to go to war.” Trump added that he told Modi, “Let’s make a deal.”
Trump has repeated this narrative over 60 times since the May 10 ceasefire, crediting himself with brokering peace. India, however, strongly refutes this claim.
Indian Government’s Response
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has categorically denied that PM Modi and Trump spoke during the crisis. Addressing Parliament earlier this year, Jaishankar said no such phone call occurred and clarified that only US Vice-President JD Vance contacted PM Modi to warn of a potential Pakistani strike.
He further stated that no discussions on trade or tariffs were linked to the ceasefire, countering Trump’s repeated claims.
Background: Operation Sindoor
The tensions began on May 7 after India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror camps inside Pakistan in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people. Pakistan responded with heightened military activity, leading to a three-day escalation.
While the US confirmed diplomatic engagement during this period, India maintains that the ceasefire was negotiated directly between New Delhi and Islamabad—without Trump’s involvement.
Trump, however, repeated his version again during a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the White House this week.
