US President Donald Trump has urged several countries to deploy naval ships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global energy supplies that has been disrupted amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said multiple nations affected by the disruption of the strategic waterway should contribute naval support to ensure safe passage for oil tankers.

“Many countries, especially those affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Strait of Hormuz, will be sending warships along with the United States to keep the strait open and secure,” Trump wrote.

He specifically called on countries such as China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom to join the effort, noting that these nations also rely heavily on energy shipments passing through the route.

Critical Energy Route Under Threat

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important energy corridors in the world. Nearly 20 percent of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments normally pass through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.

At its narrowest point, the strait is only about 54 kilometres wide, making it particularly vulnerable to military disruptions.

Recent Iranian strikes in the region have significantly slowed maritime traffic, raising concerns about global energy supplies and pushing oil prices higher.

US Plans Naval Escorts

Trump said the United States is preparing to begin escorting oil tankers through the strait to maintain shipping operations and protect energy supplies.

When asked on Friday about the timeline for the US Navy’s escort mission, the president said the operation would begin “very soon.”

Concerns Over Iranian Attacks

Despite claiming that Iran’s military capability has been severely weakened, Trump acknowledged that the country still has the ability to threaten maritime traffic in the area.

According to him, Iran could still launch drone attacks, deploy naval mines, or fire short-range missiles targeting ships passing through the waterway.

He warned that the United States would respond strongly to any further attempts to disrupt shipping in the strait.

“The United States will ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and secure,” Trump said, adding that American forces would take necessary action to neutralise threats along the coastline if required.

Global Impact

The tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have already triggered volatility in global energy markets, as many countries depend on oil shipments transported through the strategic route.

Any prolonged disruption could affect fuel prices and energy supplies worldwide, prompting calls for international cooperation to keep the vital shipping corridor open.
