Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has hailed the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss Tamil Nadu’s plea against the Mekedatu project, calling it a significant boost for Karnataka and a long-awaited relief for Bengaluru’s water needs.
Speaking at Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar said the verdict reaffirmed Karnataka’s stand on the reservoir project, which aims to enhance drinking water supply to the Bengaluru region.
“This is not about victory or defeat for any state. The judgment has delivered justice to the Mekedatu project,” he stated. “The project is designed for Karnataka’s drinking water requirement and does not harm Tamil Nadu’s interests. In fact, it helps Tamil Nadu receive its allocated Cauvery water even during years of poor rainfall.”
He reiterated that Karnataka would continue to ensure Tamil Nadu’s water share as per previous judicial directives.
“This project is on our land and built with our resources. It will strengthen our ability to release water to Tamil Nadu in accordance with the tribunal’s orders,” he added.
Shivakumar emphasized that Bengaluru would be one of the biggest beneficiaries once the project advances.
“This is a victory for the people of Bengaluru. The water stored here will support millions of residents from across the country living in the city,” he said, urging Tamil Nadu to reconsider its opposition and work collaboratively.
Regarding the Central Water Commission’s role, he clarified that the body would now be aligned with the Supreme Court’s decision.
“The Supreme Court will guide the Central Water Commission. The CWC has no choice but to support the Mekedatu project,” he said.
