The Lok Sabha witnessed a mix of sharp political remarks and lighter moments on Wednesday during an exchange between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the presiding chair, Jagdambika Pal, amid discussions during the Budget session.
The exchange began when Gandhi attempted to raise questions linked to investigative documents connected to Jeffrey Epstein and references he claimed were politically relevant. The Chair intervened, reminding him to confine his remarks strictly to matters concerning the Union Budget.
In a lighter tone, Gandhi responded that he would go easy on Pal, referring to his earlier association with the Congress party. The Chair quickly countered with a pointed remark, stating that had Gandhi listened to him earlier in his career, he might not be sitting in the opposition benches today, adding that he was speaking in his role as the presiding officer of the House.
Gandhi continued the exchange by saying that members on his side respected Pal and understood his political journey. The brief moment drew reactions from members across the House before proceedings moved forward.
Jagdambika Pal’s Political Journey
Jagdambika Pal has had a long and eventful political career. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha from the Domariyaganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh in 2009 on a Congress ticket. Over the years, he has served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament and as an MLA, and has also held ministerial responsibilities in Uttar Pradesh.
Pal is widely remembered for his brief tenure as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1998. Sworn in during a turbulent political phase, his term lasted just over a day before the previous government was reinstated. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014 and has since continued his parliamentary career.
Gandhi Criticises Government on Trade and Global Policy
During his speech, Gandhi also criticised the Centre over the interim India–US trade agreement, alleging that national interests were being compromised.
He argued that the government had acknowledged the changing global order, including intensifying geopolitical tensions and the increasing use of energy and finance as strategic tools. However, he questioned whether India’s energy security and policy independence were being influenced by external pressures.
Gandhi stated that while he did not believe the Prime Minister would willingly undermine national interests, he alleged that international pressures were visible. He referenced the broader global situation and suggested that external geopolitical dynamics were affecting domestic policy decisions.
Political Tensions Amid Budget Session
The exchange underscored the tense yet occasionally theatrical atmosphere of parliamentary proceedings, particularly during Budget debates. While opposition leaders continued to press the government on trade, economic and foreign policy matters, the Chair maintained procedural discipline by steering discussions back to the Budget agenda.
Despite the sharp rhetoric, proceedings resumed without major disruption, reflecting the high political stakes currently surrounding trade policy and global economic shifts.
