West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday delivered a sharp warning to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the political tension surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls escalated. Speaking at a massive rally in North 24 Parganas, she accused the BJP of manipulating the voter verification process and attempting to destabilise Bengal.
“We Will Shake the Country” — Mamata’s Stern Message
Addressing supporters, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief said:
“If they try to touch Bengal, we will shake the entire country.”
She alleged that the BJP used similar tactics during the Bihar elections, claiming the opposition there “failed to understand BJP’s game,” but asserted that Bengal would not allow such strategies to succeed.
Accusations Against BJP Over Citizenship and Voter List
Banerjee intensified her attack by alleging that:
- BJP is “selling CAA cards” and misleading Hindu refugees
- Signing an undertaking as a “Bangladeshi Hindu” could put many at risk
- Over 35 deaths have occurred due to SIR-related pressure
- BJP is using Artificial Intelligence to generate duplicate voters
- The SIR is a deliberate attempt to delete names of genuine voters
She accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of acting under BJP’s influence.
Mamata Questions the Need for SIR in Bengal
The West Bengal CM questioned why states like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh—both BJP-ruled—are also included in the SIR process if the issue is truly about “infiltration from Bangladesh”.
She argued that:
- Borders and immigration checkpoints are controlled by the Central Government
- Passport, customs, and security are under central agencies
- Therefore, blaming Bengal for infiltration is “politically motivated”
“ECI Has Become BJP’s Commission”
Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the Election Commission, saying:
“The Election Commission is no longer impartial; it has become a BJP Commission.”
She vowed to ensure that no legitimate voter from Bengal is removed from the list, saying she won’t allow people to be “thrown out” unfairly.
Mass Padyatra in Bangaon
After delivering her speech, the CM led a large padyatra in Bangaon, joined by hundreds of TMC workers and supporters protesting against the SIR exercise.
What Is the SIR Row?
The controversy arises from the ECI’s announcement of the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across 12 states and UTs, including West Bengal.
The final updated voter list is scheduled for release on February 7, 2026.
The states covered in this phase include:
- West Bengal
- Madhya Pradesh
- Uttar Pradesh
- Kerala
- Rajasthan
- Chhattisgarh
- Tamil Nadu
- Goa
- Gujarat
- Puducherry
- Andaman & Nicobar Islands
- Lakshadweep
Bengal’s opposition argues the exercise is being rushed to manipulate voter rolls ahead of upcoming elections.
