Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have emerged as a major contender to sign Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana in the IPL 2026 mini-auction, raising concerns for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who hope to bring him back at a lower price. The report, published by RevSportz, indicates that KKR’s interest could make Pathirana one of the most sought-after players at the auction.

CSK recently released Pathirana after four impactful seasons, a move that has surprised fans and analysts given his strong performances for the franchise. Chennai first spotted him during IPL 2020 when their performance analyst identified his talent. However, his school denied permission for him to join as a net bowler.

In 2021, CSK attempted again, but Sri Lanka Cricket blocked his participation due to U-19 national duties. Pathirana finally joined CSK in 2022 as a replacement for injured Adam Milne — and quickly proved his worth.

Over 32 matches, Pathirana claimed 47 wickets and became a crucial part of CSK’s 2023 title-winning squad. His value was such that CSK declined multiple trade offers, including:

  • Rajasthan Royals attempting a Curran-for-Pathirana deal as part of a Jadeja–Samson swap
  • Punjab Kings offering all-rounder Marcus Stoinis

Despite letting him go ahead of the auction, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise still hopes to buy him back, depending on how the auction unfolds.

However, their plans may be complicated by KKR, who reportedly held informal discussions with Pathirana. With the release of Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer, KKR enters the auction with the largest purse of ₹64.3 crore, giving them significant bidding power.

The Delhi Capitals are also showing interest, potentially turning Pathirana into one of the most competitive bids of IPL 2026.

CSK’s bold decision to release him may now test their auction strategy, as competition for the young Sri Lankan speedster intensifies.
