Former Karnataka chief minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda on Wednesday said the BJP would respond as per directions from its national leadership if the ruling Congress government “collapses due to its own internal crises.” His comments come amid growing political tension in the state as opposition leaders sharpen their criticism of the Siddaramaiah-led government.
Gowda alleged that the Congress had created “instability” through internal power struggles and suggested that the BJP could explore forming a government—if instructed by the national high command and if mid-term elections are to be avoided. He further described the Congress as a “sinking ship,” pointing out that the party currently governs only three states, two of them being small.
Ashoka Intensifies Attack on Congress Leadership
Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka continued his aggressive stance, questioning the Congress’ leadership clarity.
He demanded that the party high command immediately announce whom it intends to appoint as chief minister, accusing the ruling party of internal confusion and weakening political credibility.
Ashoka also said the BJP and JD(S) would prioritise issues related to north Karnataka, irrigation, and school closures during the upcoming assembly session. He noted that a resolution addressing north Karnataka’s problems would be taken up on day one, unlike earlier years when such topics were pushed to the final days of the session.
According to him, the government’s political standing has collapsed beyond repair. “The Congress is dead in Karnataka, and the chief minister is carrying its coffin,” he said, adding that the BJP would not accept an invitation to form the government even if offered.
BJP Flags Agricultural Issues
Ashoka criticised the government for failing to install a crest gate at the Tungabhadra dam, which he claimed caused farmers to lose their second crop. The BJP has demanded ₹25,000 per acre compensation, along with improved support prices for maize and sugarcane across 29 taluks.
Caste Debate Sparks Verbal Exchange
Ashoka also questioned Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar’s standing as a Vokkaliga leader, triggering a sharp response from Shivakumar.
Shivakumar said he had never claimed to be a Vokkaliga leader, adding:
“I am a Congress leader born as a Vokkaliga. Even if we move beyond caste and religion, they won’t leave us.”
He said BJP and JD(S) leaders should avoid commenting on Congress’ internal matters, asserting:
“My party will take care of my interest. I don’t need leaders from other parties to speak on my behalf.”
The exchange highlights escalating political rhetoric as Karnataka’s opposition and ruling party prepare for a contentious legislative session.
