A missile and drone attack linked to Iran has reportedly targeted the United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, intensifying already rising tensions in the Gulf region.

According to reports cited by Iran’s Tehran Times, the coordinated strike was carried out on the naval base located in the Juffair district of Manama. Iranian sources claimed that 21 soldiers were killed in the assault and released footage showing flames and heavy smoke emerging from the base area.

The Naval Support Activity Bahrain facility serves as the headquarters for the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, which oversees American naval operations in the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. The base is regarded as one of the most strategically important US military installations in the Middle East.

The latest attack reportedly follows a similar strike on February 28, when Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly launched a barrage of ballistic missiles along with Shahed-136 attack drones aimed at critical infrastructure within the base complex.

Images and videos circulating on social media appeared to show thick plumes of black smoke rising from the installation shortly after the strikes. Early damage assessments suggest that several facilities inside the base may have been affected, including radar systems, service buildings and satellite communication infrastructure used for fleet operations.

However, US officials have presented a more cautious version of the events. American authorities stated that personnel stationed at the base had taken shelter in bunkers during the attack. While at least three US service members were reportedly killed and others injured in related hostilities across the region, officials said there was no immediate confirmation of fatalities specifically at the Bahrain naval base.

The differing casualty figures underline the challenges of verifying battlefield information as the conflict continues to unfold.

Despite the uncertainty over the extent of the damage, the attack marks a serious escalation in the ongoing confrontation involving Iran, the United States and their regional allies. Any strike on the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet carries significant implications, given its central role in safeguarding maritime trade routes and maintaining security across critical waterways in the Gulf.
