India has delivered its first shipment of medical assistance to Iran, marking a significant humanitarian gesture amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran confirmed that the aid reached Iran on Wednesday. The consignment was received by the Iranian Red Crescent Society, which acknowledged the support and expressed appreciation to the people of India.
In a public message, Iran’s embassy in New Delhi thanked Indian citizens for their contribution, describing them as “kind people” for extending support during a challenging time.
Humanitarian Support During Crisis
The assistance comes as Iran continues to deal with the consequences of the ongoing military conflict that began in late February. The situation has put considerable pressure on the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
According to Iranian officials, the conflict has resulted in over 1,300 fatalities and more than 7,000 injuries. Healthcare facilities have also been impacted, with multiple reported attacks affecting medical services.
Healthcare System Under Strain
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported several incidents targeting healthcare facilities, along with casualties among medical personnel. Despite these challenges, officials say Iran’s primary healthcare system remains functional and capable of handling current demands.
However, concerns remain about potential escalation. Health authorities have warned of possible respiratory risks linked to toxic “black rain,” caused by smoke from burning oil installations.
Global Assistance and Preparedness
The WHO has indicated that contingency plans are in place to deliver additional emergency supplies if required. Flights carrying humanitarian aid, which had been temporarily paused, have now resumed from regional hubs.
India’s timely support highlights its growing role as a provider of humanitarian assistance during global crises, reinforcing its position as a key partner in international relief efforts.
