India has officially transitioned to E20 petrol as the standard automotive fuel from April 1, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push toward cleaner and more sustainable mobility.

The move, implemented under the guidance of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, mandates petrol pumps across all states and Union Territories to supply fuel blended with up to 20% ethanol. Oil marketing companies have also been directed to ensure strict adherence to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to maintain fuel quality nationwide.

What is E20 Fuel?

E20 petrol is a blend consisting of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Ethanol is a renewable biofuel produced from agricultural sources such as sugarcane, maize, and other grains.

Compared to regular petrol, E20 offers a higher octane rating—typically around 95 RON—resulting in more efficient and smoother combustion inside the engine.

The effect of E20 fuel largely depends on the type and age of your vehicle:

• Newer Vehicles:
  Most cars manufactured in recent years are already engineered to support E20 fuel. Automakers have upgraded engine components and fuel systems to ensure compatibility, performance, and durability.
