The central government on Monday said that all potential causes of the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad in June are currently being investigated. The clarification comes amid questions raised about the preliminary investigation report.
On June 12, a London Gatwick-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 (AI171) crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, resulting in one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent years.
A total of 260 people — 241 passengers and 19 crew members — lost their lives, while only one passenger survived.
Preliminary Report Not Final, Says Government
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, responding in the Rajya Sabha, said that the preliminary report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on July 12 contains only factual findings based on initial evidence.
He stressed that the probe remains active:
“All probable causes leading to the accident are being investigated.”
The minister also highlighted that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has established strict Civil Aviation Regulations (CARs) to ensure safe aircraft operations and maintenance.
Compensation for Victims and Injured
Air India has begun distributing compensation to affected families:
For Deceased (260 people):
- Interim compensation of ₹25 lakh has been released to the next of kin of 237 victims.
- The remaining 11 cases are under verification.
- The final compensation process has already been initiated for all deceased passengers.
For Injured (75 people):
- Full and final compensation has been paid to 43 injured individuals.
- Interim compensation has been given to 24 injured.
- Compensation for the remaining 8 individuals is under verification.
Additional Ex-Gratia from Tata Trusts:
- ₹1 crore each has been given to the families of 86 deceased, including 6 crew members.
Ongoing Probe
The AAIB is continuing its detailed investigation into the technical, operational, and human factors that may have contributed to the crash. A final report will be released after all evidence is examined.
