During the 70th Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations in Bengaluru on Saturday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reignited the language debate, accusing the BJP-led Central government of favouring Hindi and Sanskrit while sidelining other Indian languages, particularly Kannada.
Addressing the crowd at the official state formation day event, Siddaramaiah said Karnataka has been contributing ₹4.5 lakh crore in revenue to the Centre but receives only a “small portion” in return. He alleged that both Kannada and Karnataka were being treated unfairly, calling for people to “oppose all those who are anti-Kannada.”
“There are continuous attempts to impose Hindi. Grants are given for the development of Hindi and Sanskrit, while other languages of the country are being neglected,” the Chief Minister said.
🗣️ Allegations of Step-Motherly Treatment
Siddaramaiah accused the Centre of showing “step-motherly treatment” towards Karnataka and claimed that injustice was being done to the classical language Kannada by denying sufficient financial support for its promotion and preservation.
He reiterated the need for greater recognition of regional languages, saying the promotion of Hindi should not come at the cost of linguistic diversity in India.
📚 Mother Tongue as Medium of Education
The Chief Minister also pushed for a law to make the mother tongue the medium of instruction in schools, arguing that children perform better when educated in their native language.
“Children of developed nations think, learn, and dream in their mother tongue. But here, English and Hindi are weakening the talent of our children,” Siddaramaiah said, stressing the importance of nurturing local languages through education and culture.
🎉 Karnataka Rajyotsava and Other State Formation Days
November 1 marks Karnataka Rajyotsava, celebrating the state’s formation in 1956 when the Kannada-speaking regions were unified. Several other states and Union Territories — including Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh — also celebrate their formation or reorganisation on the same day.
Additionally, Puducherry observes its Liberation Day, marking the region’s transition from French to Indian administration in 1954.
