In a significant development that could impact the Congress party ahead of upcoming elections, senior leader Ramesh Chennithala has publicly admitted that the party had indeed received multiple complaints against Rahul Mamkootathil, the suspended Youth Congress state president and Palakkad MLA.

This is the first official acknowledgment from a senior Congress leader, contradicting the party’s earlier public stance that no harassment-related complaints had been received.

Speaking to reporters in Kozhikode, Chennithala said:

“The Leader of Opposition, the then KPCC president, and several party leaders had received multiple complaints against Rahul Mamkootathil. Based on this, the party unanimously decided to take action.”

His statement directly challenges the earlier claims made by the party leadership that Rahul’s removal was solely based on allegations that surfaced later.

Congress Faces Internal Contradictions

Reports indicate that around 18 complaints — both written and emailed — had reached Indira Bhavan, the state party headquarters. But KPCC president Sunny Joseph had previously dismissed such reports and maintained that the party had acted only after allegations became public.

With Chennithala now confirming the existence of complaints, the Congress finds itself in a politically vulnerable position. The revelation strengthens accusations that the party withheld information and failed to act promptly.

Political Fallout Ahead of Local Polls

With the local body elections approaching, rivals including the LDF and BJP are expected to intensify their attacks on the UDF, accusing it of suppressing serious complaints and protecting a tainted MLA.

Chennithala also emphasized that the issue is now beyond the party’s control, saying:

“Law will take its own course. What can we do? It is an individual issue.”

The admission is likely to fuel further controversy and add pressure on the Congress leadership to explain the discrepancy between its earlier statements and the latest acknowledgment.
