Political tensions continue to mount in West Bengal as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a fresh attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, criticising her public rallies against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and related citizenship verification processes.
According to BJP leaders, Banerjee’s renewed protests reflect her fear of a shifting political mood in the state ahead of the upcoming elections. The party claims that the TMC chief is “sensing the ground beneath her feet is slipping” and has become increasingly uneasy as support for the BJP gains momentum.
The BJP has placed citizenship laws and illegal immigration—particularly alleged Bangladeshi infiltration—at the core of its election strategy. Party leaders argue that identifying and removing illegal immigrants would directly weaken the TMC’s vote bank.
On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee and the TMC maintain that the BJP’s push for citizenship verification is a targeted attempt to intimidate minorities and disenfranchise genuine Indian voters. Banerjee has repeatedly accused the Centre of using the CAA, NRC, and related measures as political tools to spread fear and division.
With both parties sharpening their narratives, citizenship rights and voter identity are emerging as dominant issues shaping Bengal’s election landscape.
