Bengaluru may soon get its second international airport, as Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday revealed that the government is examining a location in South Bengaluru as the most likely site. The announcement was made during the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2025, adding clarity to months of speculation.

According to reports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been evaluating multiple potential locations for the new airport since last month. Although three sites had been shortlisted earlier, none had been officially finalised until Shivakumar’s latest hint.

Three Locations Under Consideration

In March 2025, the Karnataka government identified three candidate sites for Bengaluru’s second airport:

  • Kaggalipura, Kanakapura Road
  • Harohalli, Kanakapura Road
  • Kunigal Road, North Bengaluru

Shivakumar’s announcement now indicates that one of the Kanakapura Road sites in South Bengaluru may be the preferred option.

Why Bengaluru Needs a Second Airport

The move comes at a crucial time, as a regulatory restriction prevents the construction of a second international airport within 150 km of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) until 2033.

To meet this timeline, preliminary work has already begun.

Government Begins Preparatory Work

Karnataka’s Infrastructure Development and Industries Minister M. B. Patil confirmed that groundwork is underway to ensure the new airport is operational by 2033.

He noted that major infrastructure projects of this scale typically require five to six years to build, making early preparation essential.

Aim: Better Connectivity & Future Readiness

Shivakumar emphasised that a second airport will enhance connectivity, reduce congestion at KIA, and support Bengaluru’s rapid expansion as a global tech and investment hub.
