Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Code of Conduct during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The ICC imposed a fine of 15 percent of Arshdeep’s match fee and added one demerit point to his disciplinary record for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Reason for the penalty

Arshdeep was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which concerns throwing a ball or other cricket equipment in a manner considered inappropriate or potentially dangerous during an international match.

The incident occurred during the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings when Arshdeep fielded the ball in his follow-through and threw it back sharply toward the pitch. The throw struck New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell on the pads.

Player accepts the sanction

Arshdeep accepted the penalty proposed by Andy Pycroft, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, which meant no formal disciplinary hearing was required.

The charge was filed by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, along with third umpire Allahuddien Paleker and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock.

First offence on record

This is Arshdeep’s first offence in the past 24 months, resulting in a single demerit point on his disciplinary record.

According to ICC regulations, Level 1 offences carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 percent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

How the demerit system works

Under ICC disciplinary rules, demerit points remain on a player’s record for 24 months. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within this period, they are converted into suspension points.

Two suspension points lead to a match ban, which could mean missing one Test match or two limited-overs matches, depending on the format played next.

Despite the minor disciplinary action, Arshdeep played a key role in India’s historic T20 World Cup 2026 victory, helping the team secure the championship in front of a packed crowd in Ahmedabad.
