A tragic road accident in Tamil Nadu on Sunday left at least seven people feared dead and nearly 40 others injured after two state-run government buses collided head-on near Thirupathur. The crash occurred on a busy road stretch connecting Karaikudi and Madurai, officials confirmed.

Buses Collided While Traveling in Opposite Directions

According to police, one of the buses was en route to Karaikudi, while the other was travelling towards Madurai. The vehicles collided violently, causing severe damage to the front sections and leaving several passengers trapped.

Local residents and emergency responders rushed to the spot to assist with rescue efforts. Many of the injured were pulled out from the mangled bus interiors.

Casualties and Hospitalisation

The injured passengers have been shifted to the Sivagangai Government Hospital for urgent medical care. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as a number of victims remain in critical condition.

Investigation Underway

Police officials have launched a detailed inquiry to determine what caused the head-on collision. Preliminary reports suggest the possibility of overspeeding or misjudgment while navigating the stretch, though the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.

Emergency services remain stationed at the spot, and traffic movement has been temporarily restricted to facilitate rescue and clearing operations.

The state transport authorities are expected to release an official statement soon.
