Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been reported to be in critical condition, prompting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express deep concern and offer medical assistance. The development carries political significance, given Zia’s historically strained relationship with India compared to the warm ties shared between New Delhi and her long-time rival, former PM Sheikh Hasina.

Posting on X, PM Modi wrote:
“Deeply concerned to learn about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia… Our sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery. India stands ready to extend all possible support, in whatever way we can.”

Zia’s party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has frequently criticised India, accusing New Delhi of backing Hasina’s government and undermining democracy in Bangladesh. Hasina, who was ousted last year and is currently in India, maintained strong ties with New Delhi throughout her tenure.

Chinese Medical Team Arrives in Dhaka

Adding to the geopolitical sensitivity, a team of Chinese doctors arrived in Dhaka on Monday to assist in Khaleda Zia’s treatment, signalling Beijing’s continued interest in strengthening ties with the BNP leadership.

India Recalibrating Its Approach to Bangladesh?

This is not the first time PM Modi has reached out to Zia. During his 2015 visit to Dhaka, Modi met her as part of what the Indian government described as a “full spectrum outreach” to Bangladesh’s political spectrum.

The latest gesture is seen as an acknowledgment of the evolving political reality, with Bangladesh heading to elections next year. Surveys reported by Prothom Alo indicate a close contest between the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, with the BNP currently holding a slight lead.

India has repeatedly stated that it supports free, fair, and inclusive elections in Bangladesh and is willing to engage with all political stakeholders to ensure peace and stability in the region. The BNP has also expressed interest in maintaining “balanced and respectful” relations with India.
