DUDLEY: In a historic first for Dudley Zoo, two wolverine kits have been born to parents Helga and Floki. The tiny newcomers arrived on February 20, marking a significant milestone for the zoo’s European breeding programme aimed at supporting the species.
Although wolverines are not currently endangered, their wild populations are declining, making successful breeding programs crucial for their long-term survival.
Mother Helga Steps into Parenthood
Zoo officials say Helga, 6, has taken to motherhood exceptionally well, carefully caring for her kits and recently venturing outside to introduce them to their paddock. Their father, Floki, 3, has been keeping a watchful eye from a distance.
Sam Grove, the zoo’s carnivore section leader, expressed excitement over the birth:
“Helga is being a fantastic first-time mum. She’s been keen to move them, and it was wonderful to see her showing them off outside while dad observed from afar. It’s very exciting news for us and incredible news for the species.”
The zoo is closely monitoring the new arrivals, ensuring they continue to thrive in their new environment.
