BENGALURU: Pro-Kannada organizations, led by the Kannada Vatal Party, have called for a 12-hour Karnataka Bandh on March 22 (Saturday) to protest recent incidents in Belagavi, including the assault of a KSRTC bus conductor and vandalism of Karnataka-registered buses in Maharashtra.

Are Schools and Colleges Closed?

No official holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Bengaluru, according to Deputy Commissioner Jagadeesha G. However, some private schools in affected areas have opted to close for the day due to possible transport disruptions. Parents and students are advised to check with their respective institutions.

The Karnataka Private Schools Union has extended moral support to the bandh, but major educational unions have not backed it. As a result, most private and government colleges will remain open.

Impact on SSLC Exams

The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) has confirmed that no SSLC (Class 10) exams were scheduled for March 22, meaning the bandh will not impact students appearing for board exams.

Why is Karnataka Bandh Being Observed?

The protest stems from language-related tensions between Karnataka and Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT) workers in Pune recently blackened Karnataka-registered buses after a Marathi-speaking bus driver was allegedly assaulted in Belagavi for not speaking Kannada.

Kannada groups are demanding strict action against those responsible for violence against Kannadigas and seeking measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Has the Government Supported the Bandh?

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the government does not support the bandh and called it unnecessary. “They should have discussed the issue with the government. It will affect students and public life. Additionally, we have planned to launch a month-long water conservation campaign and Cauvery Aarti on March 22, World Water Day,” he added.

Public Services and Transport

  • Public transport, including BMTC and KSRTC buses, may be affected in some areas.
  • Emergency services, including hospitals and essential services, will operate as usual.
  • Business establishments and offices are expected to function normally, but disruptions may occur in protest-affected areas.

The bandh will last from 6 AM to 6 PM, and citizens are advised to stay informed about travel and service updates.
