European members of NATO are increasingly concerned that US President Donald Trump could order additional troop withdrawals from Europe following reports that around 5,000 American troops may be pulled out of Germany.
According to diplomatic sources familiar with ongoing discussions, NATO officials believe further reductions could extend to countries such as Italy and potentially involve scaling back military exercises and strategic deployments across Europe.
Europe Faces Growing Security Anxiety
The possibility of reduced US military presence has raised fresh concerns among European allies already uneasy about Trump’s long-standing criticism of NATO members over defence spending and military cooperation.
Officials reportedly fear the US may also reconsider plans introduced during former President Joe Biden’s administration to deploy long-range missiles in Germany as part of NATO’s strategic deterrence posture.
Diplomats believe Washington may increasingly favour countries viewed as more supportive of US policies, particularly nations in Eastern Europe such as Poland, where discussions around expanding American troop presence have resurfaced.
Tensions Over Iran and NATO Contributions
The latest tensions come amid disagreements between Washington and several European allies regarding military cooperation connected to the Middle East crisis and operations involving Iran.
Trump publicly criticised Italy and Spain for what he described as insufficient support to the United States and its allies during the regional conflict. Italy had recently denied the use of one of its air bases for operations linked to Iran, insisting parliamentary approval would be required for combat-related missions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that limitations placed by NATO members on American military operations could force Washington to reassess aspects of its European military footprint.
Strategic Importance of US Bases in Europe
The United States currently maintains approximately 85,000 military personnel across Europe. American bases in the region play a crucial role in rapid deployment operations involving the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, while also serving as a key deterrent against Russia.
Despite fears of large-scale troop reductions, NATO diplomats and defence analysts believe institutional safeguards and broader strategic interests may prevent drastic military disengagement from Europe.
Congressional restrictions introduced last year also require approval before reducing the US troop presence in Europe below a certain threshold.
Eastern Europe Could Gain More US Presence
While Western European allies remain anxious, countries closer to Russia’s border may benefit from any military repositioning. Poland, one of NATO’s highest defence spenders relative to GDP, has been actively pushing for a stronger American military presence.
The US has also reportedly expanded infrastructure at military facilities in Poland and Greece, fuelling speculation that troop deployments may gradually shift eastward rather than leave Europe entirely.
Strategic experts warn, however, that a rapid withdrawal could weaken NATO’s deterrence capability and potentially encourage geopolitical instability in the region.
