Some oil-loading activities at the United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah port were temporarily disrupted on Saturday after debris from an intercepted drone sparked a fire, according to industry and trading sources.
Fujairah, located along the Gulf of Oman and outside the Strait of Hormuz, is one of the UAE’s most critical energy centres. The emirate functions as a major oil storage and bunkering hub and serves as a key export terminal for the country’s Murban crude.
Approximately one million barrels of Murban crude per day are transported through Fujairah — accounting for roughly 1 percent of global oil demand.
Fire Triggered by Drone Debris
Authorities confirmed that the incident occurred after debris fell during the interception of a drone, igniting a fire near the port facilities.
According to the emirate’s media office, no injuries were reported, and civil defence teams were quickly deployed to control and contain the fire.
Officials acknowledged the incident but did not provide detailed confirmation regarding reports that certain oil-loading operations had been suspended.
Rising Regional Tensions
The disruption comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Earlier the same day, the United States carried out strikes targeting military infrastructure near Iran’s Kharg Island oil export terminal, intensifying fears of further instability in global energy markets.
The situation has raised concerns over the security of oil supply routes in the Gulf region.
Energy Supply Concerns Growing
Earlier this week, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned of what it described as the largest global oil supply crisis in history, triggered by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The shipping corridor, located along Iran’s southern coastline, handles a significant share of global oil shipments.
The crisis follows airstrikes launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, which have forced some producers, including the UAE, to reduce oil output.
Earlier Disruptions in UAE Energy Facilities
The Fujairah incident follows another disruption earlier in the week when Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) halted operations at the Ruwais refinery after a fire broke out within the facility complex following a drone strike.
These incidents have added to concerns about the vulnerability of key energy infrastructure in the region.
Operational Impact Still Unclear
At present, the full impact of the Fujairah incident on oil exports and shipments remains uncertain.
ADNOC, which operates several facilities in the emirate, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the operational status of the port.
Reports earlier suggested that some oil-loading operations had been paused as a precaution following the fire.
